I have extensive experience in scaling businesses. Business scaling requires comprehensive change management, effective performance management for scaling, appropriate use of systems engineering, robust quality assurance and effective acquisition of skills suitable for business scaling.
First, the problem with scaling companies is that the transition from a group of a few founders, where calibration, communication and performance measurement are much simpler, to a much more complex process occurs when the number of employees increases significantly and calibration, communication and performance are complicated and often neglected in favour of other, more familiar activities.
Second, scaling manufacturing organisations from low volume and few products/parts/components to high volume and many products/parts/components is extremely complex, and the landscape is littered with painful and unsuccessful case studies. Scaling puts tremendous pressure on supply chain management, quality assurance, appropriately skilled personnel, etc.
