Our client currently has an opportunity for a Welding Foreman to plan, organise, lead and control the activities of the department in accordance with company standards.
The successful incumbent will be a qualified Artisan with an N2 and Red Seal qualification together with ten years’ experience.
Together with the Hull Construction Manager, allocates staff and materials daily and weekly, including the amount of artisans required for the job and the issuing of tasks for each artisan
Arranges replacements for absentees in consultation with the Hull Construction Manager.
Ensures staff do daily and weekly clean ups and attend to housekeeping issues.
Assists team members by ‘trouble shooting’ (systems, policies or procedures, machines, materials, manpower or management practices).
Supervises and assists in the actual job.
Presents problems concerning welding to the Hull Construction Manager.
Ensures that there is always sufficient supply of welding consumables.
Lead artisans by example.
Handles and coordinates multiple projects at a time.
Communicates and agrees targets and work objectives with staff in conjunction with Hull Construction Manager.
Encourages participation in decision making, ideas and suggestions for continuous improvement.
Encourages team members to take responsibility for meeting quality standards, targets and deadlines.
Encourages team members to ensure that machinery, materials and labour are optimally utilized and work in progress is correctly recorded.
Ensures consistency in the application of rules and work standards by: monitoring and investigating non-conformance; counselling and corrective coaching; taking appropriate disciplinary action.
Ensures fairness and consistency within the team (leave, overtime, etc.).
Trains and coaches team members to meet targets and quality standards.
Assesses performance and identifies performance gaps.
Identifies employees with potential and recommends learning opportunities.
Stimulates and encourages ideas for quality and productivity improvement.
Holds regular team meetings.
Invites ideas and suggestions for improvement.
Gives warnings and disciplines staff if required or escalates it to a higher level.
Gathers timekeeping reports daily and addresses absences from work with team members on a daily basis.
Handles conflict, employee complaints and grievances proactively.
Does daily roll call of staff and checks work is fairly allocated amongst staff.
Assists with tracking the planning and alerting the Hull Building Coordinator of delays and bottlenecks.
Updates QC documents and alerts Hull Construction Manager for inspections.
Compiles reports as required.
Ensures percentage updates daily.
Does daily Navision timekeeping and allocations.
Does daily emails and follow ups for anything required.
Alerts Hull Construction Manager of issues via email.
Promotes safe working practices ensuring that unsafe conditions are identified and rectified immediately.
Ensure all staff have and use appropriate safety and protective equipment and PPE.
Promote safe working practices through training, coaching and if necessary, discipline.
Ensure proper ventilation and good lighting is placed in the tanks.
Correct handling of electric and hydraulic tools.
Check gas leakages on acyetteling bottles.
Ensure safety harnesses are worn when working on heights.
Fill in QC documents on time.
Check overall welding quality for both distortion, undercut, stop/starts; striking and other defects and ensures that they are rectified.
Inspection of all units with QC.
Fill in JSA’s twice a week.

Job Qualification & Experience:
Education and experience:
Qualified Artisan with an N2 and Red Seal qualification.
Ten years’ experience.
Microsoft office pertinent, especially Excel and databases.
Mathematical skills: Must be capable of accurately performing daily reconciliations and perform daily weekly, monthly and annual budgeting procedures.
Leadership and teamwork:
Interact and lead people in multi-cultural environment.
Show clear direction and provide support to staff.
Lead and guide by example, demonstrating an authoritarian leadership style.
Evaluate work execution and staff performance and provide recommendations thereof.
Ability to organise resources and subordinates to achieve timely and quality work deliverables.
Prioritizes tasks and ability to multi-tasks so as to deliver on the operational plan and changing demands of the organisation.
Able to detect problems, identify the causes of the problems and propose suitable suggestions/interventions to manage them.
Breaks down and analyses information effectively.
To date, our client has constructed & delivered 40 vessels to the African continent (countries include South Africa, Zanzibar, Angola, Kenya and many more). Vessel types constructed and delivered to date have included offshore patrol vessels, dredgers, tugs, naval craft and supply vessels.
