Job Description:

Established over a decade ago, our client is a well-known producer of Silicomanganese for world markets. They are currently in the market for a Senior Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer / Superintendent who will report directly to the Engineering Manager.

The Senior Electrical & Instrumentation Engineer / Superintendent will be responsible for all electrical- and instrumentation maintenance as well as project-related activities on site, along with the management of all relevant personnel and contractors, with all legal and statutory responsibilities attached to aforementioned.

The ideal incumbent will hold a formal tertiary qualifications in the field of electrical engineering (preferably heavy current), able to demonstrate sound understanding of medium voltage electrical distribution systems, with particular emphasis on switch gear and transformers. Candidates must have a good understanding of the instrumentation- and control disciplines; however, any candidates whose primary qualifications are in aforementioned fields will NOT be considered. A Government Certificate of Competence will be beneficial. Proficiency in ETap electrical load flow software will definitely be advantageous. The successful candidate should ideally have at least ten years’ experience, with significant exposure to a heavy industrial environment (preferably smelting). Exposure to both operational- and project environments would be considered beneficial; in the absence of a candidate with suitable exposure, candidates with pure operational backgrounds will be preferred to candidates with pure project/construction/consultancy backgrounds.

Primary purpose: The successful candidate will be responsible for all electrical- and instrumentation maintenance- and project-related activities on site, along with the management of all relevant personnel and contractors, with all legal and statutory responsibilities attached to aforementioned.
Primary Role:

  • To control and coordinate electrical and instrumentation activities within the company.
  • To provide technical support to all engineering personnel in ensuring that the engineering department provides a fully functioning, effective and flexible workforce.
  • To maintain a high standard of workmanship.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that engineering personnel conduct all work in accordance with company safety, procedure and regulations.
  • Ensure that all operations handling equipment is maintained to the highest possible standards’ in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and that of furnace availability is maintained at an optimum level.
  • Implement and continually develop all necessary maintenance programs, systems and procedures to enable the department to function effectively.
  • Authorise and monitor the purchase and issue of spare parts, consumables, lubricants, tools and equipment from engineering stores and supervise stock inventory level.
  • Liaise closely with plant superintendents to ensure minimum disruption to the operation.
  • Collate all relevant information to compile regular comprehensive reports for the Engineering Manager, highlighting areas of concern where necessary.
  • Ensure modification procedures are administered.
  • Provide technical engineering support to projects from study phase thorough constriction and commissioning.
  • Ensure engineering and technical support to company’s development work shall be provided to international standards for Ferro- Manganese industry using in-house resources or employing suitable consultants, contractors and suppliers.
  • To provide technical support to all business areas as may be required in order to achieve business objectives including but not limited to production targets, capital budgets, environment, safety, etc.
  • Oversee technical and management development of the workforce.
  • Development and optimization of preventative maintenance for all fixed site equipment.
  • Liaise with management and other departments to ensure optimal production and seamless efficiency.
  • Participate in the specification, purchase and installation of new machinery and equipment.

Job Qualification & Experience:

  • The successful candidate must preferably have a university degree or B. Tech as tertiary qualification, although diploma candidates will be considered if they have relevant experience and proven competencies.
