Job description / core competencies:

The clinical component of the job includes:

  • Perform vision tests and analyze results using automated tools and computer equipment and/ or manual equipment where needed
  • Diagnose vision problems, eye pathologies and binocular vision disturbances
  • Prescribe corrective spectacles, contact lenses and recommend medication (as per scope of practice)
  • Provide treatments such as vision therapy or low-vision rehabilitation or appropriately refer to specialized colleagues within the industry
  • Provide pre- and post-operative care to patients undergoing eye surgery or related specialist treatments
  • Evaluate patients for the presence of diseases such as diabetes and refer patients to other healthcare providers as needed
  • Promote general eye health
  • Assisting patients with frame selection, taking of segment and fitting heights, taking of pupillary distance measurements
  • Staying up to date with knowledge and relevant information in the field of optometry
  • Comply with laws, regulations and industry related standards
  • Instructing patients in inserting and caring for contact lenses
  • Give instructions and communicate with supervisors, peers and subordinates (Practice Manager, Lab Technician and Optical Assistants)
  • Assist with simple repairs and basic dispensing (adjusting frames, cleaning of lenses, nose pads and screws)
  • Ensuring equipment is always disinfected before performing tests on a new patient
  • Ensuring good hand and general hygiene is maintained at all times

Administrative component of the job includes:

  • Welcoming and greeting customers
  • Assist with conflict resolution, complaints and disputes
  • Attending to patient and customer queries as far as possible
  • Documenting client information and results
  • Assist with following up on outstanding orders, changes, courier requests if Technicians are not available
  • Have a good understanding of current promotions and products / assist with sales on additional merchandise and goods
  • In-house and on the job training / coaching and consulting
  • Quality control check / check orders before they leave the practice
  • Contribute general support to ensure store operates effectively as required and needed
  • Wearing the correct uniform / dress code and ensuring good brand representation at all times. Personal hygiene is important
  • Assist with selection of new frames for the store with representatives or online websites


  • Ensure that spectacles/lenses meet prescription requirements; making adjustments as necessary to ensure product fits patient comfortably and also to clearly re-enforce Optometrist’s expectation as to the potential benefits of the spectacles to the customer.

Job Qualification & Experience:

Bachelor’s Degree in Optometry

Preferred skills:

  • Excellent communication, speaking and interpersonal skills with good listening skills, comprehension skills (reading and writing).
  • Be able to handle hectic schedules and multitask; highly organized and self-motivated and should be able to rely on their own judgement and have good decision making skills.
  • Be good at establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships. Be customer service orientated, be able to show support and compassion.
  • Good medicine, biological, chemistry, science and mathematics, computer, psychological, administrative and management, sales, marketing, human resource skills.
  • Experience and know how to work with automated machinery.
  • A strong attention to detail, manual dexterity, and arm-hand steadiness is also a necessity because your job requires a good amount of precision.
