Job Description:

Our client provides a wide product range to the steel industry in South Africa from their modern and comprehensive steel service centres and specialty steel divisions. The plant has a very low staff turnaround, a testament to the great working environment and culture. The business is expanding, therefore the need for this brand new position within their organogram.

They are looking for a qualified candidate, fully vaccinated. The individual must have extensive exposure in the automotive environment, knowledge of cranes, gearboxes, hydraulics, fluid dynamics, etc.

Requirements: B-Tech or BSC Eng. in Mechanical Engineering; minimum 7 years with relevant work experience, preferably in a specialist role. Metal processing plant experience would be an advantage.

The Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha branch was opened in the early 2000’s after the acquisition of a steel company. The branch has since seen 3 major extensions to the facility and now boasts some of the most technologically-advanced steel processing machinery in the country. The 30 000m² facility offers the full range of automotive steel for OEMs, 1st and 2nd-tier, and delivers to the automotive market with a just in time (JIT) delivery service, processed from their unique coil processing production lines. They also cater to the construction industry, stocking the full range of structural steel carried within the group. Being located close to the harbour eases the importing of increasingly complex grades of automotive steel.

Products include: Long Products, Sections, Sheet and Plate, Slitting Material, Special Steel, Roof Sheeting and Tube.

Services include: Blanking, Export & Trading Services, Guillotining, Slitting, Special Steels Services and Supply Chain Management.

Position details:
Type: Permanent
Reports to: Branch Manager
Key performance areas (duties & responsibilities):

  • Ensure compliance to safety, health, environmental, quality policies, and standards.
  • Plan, organise, lead and control operations work activities in both maintenance and production.
  • Achieve and sustain equipment reliability levels to achieve OEE objectives.
  • Project planning and execution.
  • Assemble, install, repair, and maintain machinery and equipment as required and as per OEM standards.
  • Optimise planned maintenance inspection cards to be predictive and preventative.
  • Management of sub-contractors including their safety and quality of work.
  • Training
    • Develop team members to be knowledgeable in equipment specifications, operating standards, and fault-finding.
    • Develop tools / systems / processes to improve knowledge and skills transfer.
    • Manage and assess the performance of individual team members.
  • Continuous improvement
    • Optimise production and maintenance processes to improve productivity and reliability.
    • Root cause analysis of factors causing poor operations performance.
  • Key KPIs – machine availability, machine utilisation, break down performance, OEE, cost, continuous improvement.

Job Qualification & Experience:

Academic qualifications:

  • B-Tech or BSC Eng. in Mechanical engineering


  • Minimum 7 Years with relevant work experience
  • Preferably in a specialist role
  • Computer Literacy- SAP, Microsoft suite and MS Projects
  • Metal processing plant experience would be an advantage

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Must have the ability to lead and organise during a machine repair or installation
  • Apply general rules, mathematical methods, information, and machine manuals
  • Sound knowledge of a maintenance and production environment
  • Good client relations, communication skills including verbal aptitude
