Job Description:

With experience in Mechanical, Process, Metallurgical, Electrical, Control & Instrumentation, Piping, Civil & Structural Engineering our client is a multi-disciplinary ‘total solutions provider’ offering engineering, project management, construction and O&M to the mining and minerals, construction, industrial, energy and power sectors in South and Southern Africa.

Manages conceptual development, design, engineering, construction through to commissioning and commercial operation. Supplies permanent, innovatively engineered solutions and complete services to establish construction, processing, material handling and environmental control.

Looking for the services of a highly motivated Mechanical (Project) Engineer to carry out the business objectives of the company in a cost-effective manner. Reporting directly to the Engineering Manager and working closely with other Engineers, the Mechanical Engineer will provide engineering services and/or field support.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Preliminary cost estimates for potential projects and budget proposal.
  • Performing mechanical design and verification on designs by using Software or by first principles.
  • Develop solutions in all areas of the process plant across various systems, unit operations and mechanical equipment.
  • Prepare, review & approve mineral process plant mechanical equipment.
  • Develop mechanical engineering deliverables, solutions to infield problems, and involvement in the execution and commissioning of these solutions.
  • Perform mechanical engineering tasks in projects, in a variety of commodities.
  • Prepare, review & approve sizing/development of process plant equipment and equipment specifications.
  • Prepare, review & approve technical equipment requisitions required for procurement purposes.
  • Prepare, review & approve client/project standard specifications and design criteria.
  • Manage and maintain the equipment list.
  • Manage, oversee, review & approve data books, and end of job documentation (E.O.J), perform package management of single mechanical equipment and multidisciplinary packages, i.e. Floatation Cells, Leaching, Filtering etc.
  • Completing tasks in accordance with the specific stages of the engineering design process.
  • Conduct site visitations to approve work carried out.
  • Produce, review & approve Mineral Process Plant Equipment scope of work, documents for procurement purposes.
  • Collaborate with the drafting/design team to ensure all drawings and designs are in-line with project specifications.
  • Perform, review & approve technical bid analysis & tabulation which will be used to select appropriate vendors.
  • Review vendor information for technical detail and information.
  • Important company solutions based on client requirements that are in line with the company’s business model. Conduct review & approve technical investigations.
  • Assist in leading project progress, interactive planning sessions and kick-off meetings. Including preparing man-hour estimates for proposal.
  • Assist in management of change orders and scope of works.
  • Conduct technical / feasibility study and investigations.
  • Conduct integrity audits on existing process plant mechanical infrastructure.
  • Adhere to company standardised practices, procedures and general work instruction.
  • Adhere to engineering national standards & specifications, local Acts & regulations, i.e. Mine Health and Safety Act No 29 of 1996, Mechanical & Piping Engineering Procedures, Policies & Work Instructions.
  • Specialist knowledge of international codes, i.e. ISO, ASME, BS, SANS, etc. of practice relevant to the industry, knowledge of national and international standards, knowledge of mechanical engineering design & principles, proficient with engineering tools and software, knowledge and ability to perform technical evaluations for standard and non-standard requisitioned materials and construction contracts and to be part of construction bid evaluation meetings.
  • Knowledge of project planning, cost control, procurement & contracts processes including document control. Extensive knowledge of bill of quantities.
  • When requested, act as Lead Mechanical Engineer on projects or studies.
  • Operate with full competence and independence in the execution of all design calculations, design criteria, in the compilation and execution of equipment lists and calculations.
  • Develop new criteria/calculations where required, maintaining high levels of accuracy. Provide frequent training, guidance and supervision to junior colleagues.
  • Actively engage with clients to understand project requirements.
  • Define the mechanical design criteria.
  • Undertake trade off studies to resolve options.
  • Carry out engineering design calculations and equipment sizing calculations.
  • Prepare specifications of mechanical attributes for equipment, through compilation of datasheets (or mechanical input to general datasheets).
  • Generation of the design general specification adhering to appropriate safety standards, and documentation into functional descriptions.
  • Display full competence and independence in the compilation of mechanical equipment list, tagging, general layout, arrangements.
  • Ensure mechanical specifications portray the appropriate information and design intent.
  • Compile operating cost estimates including estimation of consumables, labor, maintenance materials and power.
  • Contribute to the development and or refining of all ISO aligned, mechanical systems and procedures.

Job Qualification & Experience:

Knowledge required:

  • Advanced understanding of design principles.
  • Primary handling of ores with respect to mineral processing.
  • All aspects of process plants design and operation.
  • Industry codes/standards and interdepartmental practices and procedures.
  • Pricing, tendering and budgeting principles, tools and control.
  • Safety consciousness and application of good practice health and safety.
  • Good understanding of best practises in the mining industry.
  • Project construction, supervision, commissioning and handover.
  • Listening to, interpreting and understanding feedback from clients and team members.
  • The ability to work under pressure and to achieve deadlines.
  • Organisational skills, planning, project management and prioritising ability.

Strict requirements:

  • Exceptional knowledge with IT functions like MS Office.

  • Ability to lead mechanical engineering tasks on a project, within the allocated budget and schedule, including mentoring and guidance of junior colleagues.

Qualifications and experience:

  • Proven minimum 8 years’ experience within the EPCM industry
  • Mechanical Engineering degree
  • Registered with ECSA or ZIE as a Pr Eng /Tech Eng
  • Project management qualification an added advantageous
