Job Description:

Due to recent acquisition our client, a globally renowned South African automotive parts producer, is looking for a new General Manager – the most senior executive in the South African organization.

As General Manager you will manage the overall operations including to develop and approve strategies to meet investor, consumer and employee needs. Make important decisions that affect the company’s direction and its employees through:

  1. Setting strategy and direction;
  2. Modeling and setting the company’s culture, values, and behavior;
  3. Building and leading the senior executive team;
  4. Allocating capital to the company’s priorities.

Position details:

Reports to: CEO

Reporting, total staff compliment: 6 Managers Direct

Job titles of direct reports: Operations Manager, Commercial Manager, Finance Manager, Purchasing Manager, Legal Manager and HR Manager.

Key external relationships: Main Client (OEM Supplier).

Primary purpose: Manage the overall operations of the company, including product development, production, commercial, marketing, finance, HR, communications and logistics. Develop and approve strategies to meet investor, consumer and employee needs. Make important decisions that affect the company’s direction and its employees through:

  1. Setting strategy and direction
  2. Modeling and setting the company’s culture, values, and behavior
  3. Building and leading the senior executive team
  4. Allocating capital to the company’s priorities.

Position interfaces:

  • Management – Management of all supervisory levels
  • Departments – Set policies and decision making

Travel requirements: Frequent international travel to the holding company and customer.

Operations:

  • Develop high-quality business strategies and plans ensuring their alignment with short-term and long-term objectives.
  • Lead and motivate subordinates to advance employee engagement and develop a high-performing managerial team.
  • Oversee all operations and business activities to ensure they produce the desired results and are consistent with the overall strategy and mission.
  • Make high-quality investment decisions to advance the business and increase profits.
  • Enforce adherence to legal guidelines and in-house policies to maintain the company’s legality and business ethics.
  • Review financial and non-financial reports to devise solutions or improvements.
  • Build trust relations with key partners and stakeholders and act as a point of contact for important shareholders.
  • Analyse problematic situations and occurrences and provide solutions to ensure company survival and growth.
  • Maintain a deep knowledge of the markets and industry of the company.

Reporting:

  • Collate and report business progress to shareholders.
  • Keep the Shareholders fully informed on the condition of the company and on all the important factors influencing it.
  • Identify problems and opportunities and address them; bring those which are appropriate to the Shareholders and/or its committees and facilitate discussion and deliberation.
  • Inform the Shareholders and its committees about trends, issues, problems and activities in order to facilitate policy-making.

Recommend policy positions.

Administration:

  • Carry out general administrative responsibility relating to position, e.g. scheduling of meetings, correspondence, data/document management, etc.

Job Qualification & Experience:

  • Graduate degree in related fields of engineering / finance / business.
  • Foundry operations knowledge (advantageous).
  • Minimum 5 years in a senior management role.
  • +/- 10 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.

Behavioural competencies:

  • Experience in developing profitable strategies and implementing vision.
  • Strong understanding of corporate finance and performance management principles.
  • Familiarity with diverse business functions such as marketing, PR, finance, etc.
  • In-depth knowledge of corporate governance and general management best practices.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with outstanding organizational, leadership, analytical abilities and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
  • Conflict management.

Technical competencies:

  • Basic knowledge/ understanding of foundry operations and processes.
  • Company administrative systems.
  • Understanding of all policies.
  • Relevant industry legislation and main agreements.
  • Legal compliance.
  • Comanage/ control quality compliance.
