Job Description:

Preference will be given to a candidate that has a completed matric qualification with mathematics and science and has a B. Eng. or B Tech (NQF Level 7) in Chemical Engineering or Extraction Metallurgy.
Preference will be given to candidates that have a minimum of 7 years’ experience in a precious metals processing plant of which 3 years must be in a supervisory role.

Our client is currently sourcing a Refinery Foreman to manage the operational responsibilities of the silver plant (including silver bar casting). The position carries a legal appointment according to section 8.2 (i) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The position manages the metal accounting responsibilities including monthly and quarterly stock take. The position will be required to work rotational stand-by which will cover the Refinery and Fabrication business unit.

Position details:

Type: Permanent
Primary purpose: The purpose of this role is to manage the operational responsibilities of the silver plant which includes silver bar casting. The position will be required to work rotational stand-by which will cover the Refinery and Fabrication business unit.

Major responsibilities:

  1. Production targets and deliverables:
  • Ensure that the electro-silver banks are running as per the production plant to meet the required demand.
  • To ensure that the required amount of silver products is produced within the prescribed purity.
  • Housekeeping standards are maintained high at all sections of responsibility. All signs are conspicuously displayed, stacking and storage standards are maintained.
  • 100% participation during stock count to ensure correct labelling and proper evaluation of material and ITMs.
  • Manage the translation/cascading of business/production goals and personal performance criteria (KPIs) of the electro-silver processes with clear accountability and targets to the Operators.
  1. People management:
  • Manage the employees effectively with performance management, ensuring that discipline is maintained and that the labour relations act is adhered to in conjunction with the HR department. Ensure a well-disciplined workforce, minimal hearings and grievances.
  • Plans appropriate employee training and development, in order to ensure the continued and smooth operation of the department.
  • Ensure an effective transfer of skills within the department and perform the required assessor duties of the plant.
  • Ensure that there is a motivated team that has enough requisite variety to deal with challenges/changes without any external intervention.
  • Perform plant PJOs or PTOs on subordinates to ensure that procedures are still followed for each task.
  1. Operational efficiencies:
  • Produce weekly reports (production and OEE).
  • Alignment with support service departments that would enable better operations for the electro-silver plant.
  • Ensure that the production targets as set during the budget process are achieved and exceeded as follows:
    • Ag Stock < 8.4 tons in the refinery complex,
    • Au Stock < 300 kg in silver SLOCs,
    • Ag process efficiency > 99% in the refinery complex,
    • Electro-silver banks conversion > 90%.
  1. Safety compliance:
  • Ensure 100% compliance to reporting of all incidents.
  • Ensure 100% compliance and completion of all investigation of all reported incidents.
  • Ensure 100% implementation of corrective actions.
  • Ensure 100% compliance to the use of personal protective attire.
  • Ensure 100% completion of statutory training.
  1. Cost:
  • Ensure cost control of consumables e.g. issuing of PPE to sub-ordinates.
  • Switching off unnecessary equipment if not in use in order to save electricity.
  • Report faulty equipment that could increase electricity usage.
  1. Quality:

Ensure that the silver plant team meets or exceeds the following quality requirements:

  • Silver Bars must meet the following specifications: Ag = 99.99%,
  • Silver granules must meet the following specifications: Ag = 99.99%,
  • Specifications may change according to customer requirements.

Job Qualification & Experience:

Minimum qualification:

Skills:

  • Production planning and execution, technical trouble shooting, coaching and training of personnel, continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Proficient in Computer literacy (MS office – Outlook, Word, Excel, SAP, QlikView, CURA).
  • Good communicating skills (verbal and written).
  • Problem-solving and risk management skills.

Knowledge / experience:

  • Preference will be given to candidates that have a minimum of 7 years’ experience in a precious metals processing plant of which 3 years must be in a supervisory role.
  • Preference will be given to a candidate that has in-depth understanding of refinery processes and the ability to plan, organise, lead and control refinery processes.
  • Preference will be given to a candidate that has knowledge of electro-silver processes (technical and troubleshooting).
  • Preference will be given to a candidate that has an understanding of the Refinery process hazard and risks.
  • SHEQ knowledge – Able to conform to the various departmental safety requirements.
  • Additional experience and qualifications above the minimum requirements will be to the applicant’s advantage.
