Job Description:

Experienced Safety Professionals: Safety Manager, Safety Officers & Safety Administrator for hardcore physical furnace rebuild work (site based positions) with projects/shut-down experience.
Consulting engineering firm that handles ”world-class rebuild optimization projects” are growing their support team and require safety professionals to support their project management team in managing multiple (small to medium-sized projects) in a highly pressurized and challenging environment for a demanding and professional client that only expects excellence. You will be based at the client’s site in Limpopo & North West Province.

Position details:

Safety Manager reports to Project Manager

  • Provide leadership and support all safety management on site as well as contribute to the strategic overview of safety on the project.
  • Contribute to the achievement of safety KPI’s at operational level through supporting and driving the overall safety improvement plan.
  • Safety assessments, reports and advise operations on applications through guiding and advising operations on operational risk management and identification.
  • Provide stakeholder management and knowledge sharing through initiating and rolling out Safety awareness campaigns, best practices, technologies and relevant equipment identified.
  • Management of the safety section with direct responsibility in delivering the below:
    • Alignment to the Operational Risk Management Programme of the mine.
    • Continued certification to ISO 45001.
    • Operational and Compliance:
      • Safety officer inspections, oversight and assurance.
      • Capturing and reporting on learning from Incidents.
      • Critical control verification.
      • Continued implementation of Safety Management System.
      • Short term safety improvement drives.
    • Administration:
      • Safety reporting.
      • Monitoring and governance of ISOMETRIX system as well as providing training and support.
      • Tracking and submission of Alert 1 and 2 reports.
    • Safety analyst and assurance specialist:
      • Incident analysis and recommendation for future programs.
  • Behavioral safety programs

Safety Officer – reports to Safety Manager:

  • Provide support to the SHE Managers and ensure safe working environment for the project
  • Implement SHEQ systems, ensure all site and related staff abide by the SHEQ policies and procedures.
  • All duties and responsibilities of Safety Officer as outlined in the Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 and as carried out on the legal appointment where applicable.
  • Implement policies, procedures, processes, standards and ISO OSHAS systems and maintain.
  • Reporting and monitoring.
  • Execute internal and external safety audits.
  • Enhance safety awareness.
  • Ensure full and extensive participation.
  • Provide professional/specialist advisory service.
  • Ensure compliance to all statutory requirements.
  • Ensure that all contractors comply with legislation.
  • Safety training to employees and contractors.
  • Investigate and report on accidents and incidents.
  • Perform Ad hoc tasks under direction of Safety Manager.
  • Anticipate, identify, analyze and evaluate hazardous conditions and practices.
  • Develop hazard control designs, methods, procedures and programs.
  • Implement, administer, advise and educate others on hazard control programs.
  • Measure, audit and evaluate the effectiveness of hazard control programs.
  • Analyze incidents and non-conformances with the purpose of identifying deficiencies and contributing factors in the management system.
  • Risk assessments, Trend and incident analyses.


Safety Administrators- Report to Safety Manager

    • Provide support to the SHE Managers and ensure safe working environment for the project.
  • Good IT skills to establish, maintain and manage spreadsheets and databases.
  • Assist with organising staff training with internal and external providers when required.
  • Assist with Site Inductions for new employees, sub-contractors and other suppliers as required.
  • Coordinate appointments for Covid testing and onsite testing and maintain records.
  • Monitoring Safety Conversation KPI’s.
  • Co Ordination and stock control of site PPE.
  • Preparation of records and associated documentation relating to internal and external audit such as ISO14001 and ISO45001.
  • Tracking of HSE data/performance.
  • Assisting teams with general HSE administrative support to maintain training records.

Travel requirements:

Core hours, on site work, office and site base mix.
Office and construction on site environment, stay away from home for periods of time.

Location (country, city): site based in Limpopo & North West Province

Job Qualification & Experience:

  • National Diploma in Safety Management (NADSAM) or in Construction management
  • Certificate in NOSA’s SAMTRAC; MBO and IT IS or COMSOC will serve as a recommendation
  • At least 3-5 years proven practical knowledge and experience of daily Safety management onsite in a mining/construction environment
  • Experience of the Mine Health and Safety Act (Act 29 of 1996)
  • Compensation of Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act
  • Registration with a South African professional (SHE) institution would be advantageous
  • A leadership or management development programme would be advantageous
  • Provide support to the SHE Managers and ensure safe working environment for the project

Safety Manager
10 to 15 years of experience with a minimum of 5 years’ safety management experience.
Must have worked in a Project, EPC/EPCM or mining house environment.
Work under extreme pressure.
Excellent report writing skills.
Ability to solve problems.
Multi-skilled, can work under pressure, hard worker, efficient, dedicated and can work independently with or without supervision.
Excellent communication, organizing, planning, co-ordination, inter-personal and computer literacy (MS Office).
Excellent report writing skills.
Ability to solve problems.
Be medically fit due to the nature of the business.
Must be willing to travel and be based on site from Monday to Friday.
