Led by a young and dynamic management team, this is a relatively new open pit mine with an estimated 35-year life cycle. The client is a private company, not a big corporate, that has in the past contracted for the government but now has their own concession.
Greenfields development of the area’s coal mine commenced in 2019 with first coal processing through the crush and wash in 2020. The coal seams comprise of 3 distinct coal types i.e. thermal coal, industry (metallurgical) coal and coking coal. Current installed capacity for phase 1 of the project is set at 350tph crush and screening plant feeding a decoupled 100tph wet jig. A total run of mine tonnage of 120,000t is mined monthly. Phase two of the project aims to increase plant capacity to 250,000t per month by installing a second coal circuit like the phase 1 installation.
They are currently in the market for an experienced coal processing metallurgist to head up their coal washing plant operations. The role will support the technical operation of the coal preparation and washing with technical advice and laboratory test work; a mix of pre-agreed, scheduled tasks and urgent priority-based tasks assigned by the Mine Manager / GM.
The successful candidate will take overall responsibility for the coal preparation and washing operations which will include the shift process teams reporting directly to him/her.
Type: Permanent (dependent on annual/biannual work permit renewals)
Rotation: 2 Months on, 1.5 weeks off
Status: Either married or single status FIFO will be considered depending on the personal circumstances if the successful candidate
Reports to: Mine Manager
Supports the Mine Manager in always maximizing the value of Extractive Metallurgy services to Western areas coal mine providing health and safety is not compromised.
Supports the provision of relevant technical information to the technical and operations units with the aim of driving value through optimized product recoveries.
Completes a baseload of detailed technical investigations aligned to the strategic intent of the business unit operation, both at site and in the laboratory, environment aimed at delivering a specified value for the business unit.
Delivers accurate and relevant reports to support the identification of current and future value adding opportunities.
Supports effectiveness and continuous improvement of the productivity and value contribution within the assigned tasks.
Supports the provision of relevant technical information to the technical and operations teams.
Other than the baseload task assignments the metallurgist will lead the coal preparation and washing operational teams.
Ensures that SHEQ issues are considered in all activities.

Job Qualification & Experience:
MSc Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering or Chemical Engineering with 3 years’ experience in processing or process development OR PHD in Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering or Chemical Engineering, relevant to coal hydrometallurgy/Processing, OR BSc Chemistry, Metallurgical Engineering or Chemical Engineering with 3 years relevant experience on jigging, floatation or DMS plants.
Experience/exposure to coal metallurgical operations through project work, research and development or operational exposure, over a period exceeding 3 years, would be considered essential.
Prior knowledge coal preparation and wash treatment processes.
