Position details:

Reports to: Technical Director
Reporting, total staff compliment: 30 approx.
Job titles of direct reports: Site Manager/ Supervisor x 3 (3 shifts) Operators, Miner, Millwright, HSE and Safety Representative/ Officer, Driver Truck/LHD and Administrator.
Key internal relationships: Technical Director and Technical Specialist.

Primary purpose:

Globally at the forefront of technological advancement. Responsible to lead and direct all international projects installation and commissioning of first of its kind “highly specialized and advanced equipment”. First project is for a prestigious and highly demanding client. Recruit and manage your operating team (locally recruited) to ensure work is executed with excellence, timeously to project plan, quality and safely with no workplace incidents and in accordance with the requirements of the OHS-act.

Your first project/ contract will be based in South Africa.
Project duration is 12 months: 1-month assembly, 1-month commissioning and 10 months production.

Job description / core competencies:

Responsible for overall project management activities;
Involved in the selection and recruitment of your operating team on site;
Manage the site operations team and Engineering;
Verify scope of work and ensure full scope is provided to client;
Lead and follow up from project definition, specification, construction, commissioning and the start-up of new installations, until handover to the client production team;

Proper commissioning and acceptance procedures to be implemented;
Ensure PM-schedules are in place, executed and optimized.

Engineering input/oversight, including defining and achieving project goals, anticipating and minimizing risks, project management and managing resources;
Assist commercial teams with technical support in procurement related to the project and site requirements and that of the team;
Communication with clients to ensure contractual compliance;
Manage all commercial issues relating to contracts, i.e. costing, contract cash-flow and client invoicing;
Identify and eliminate/mitigate EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) risks;
Promote alignment to company’s safety guidelines;
Provide technical support for solving safety, quality, capacity and process performance-related issues;
Compile quality control and quality assurance procedures and ensure they are followed, these to include project risk assessments;
Ensure that relevant notifications, applications and communication procedures are followed to all relevant internal and external departments and as required by law and local by-laws;
Prepare all required documentation, accurately and on time;
Ensure clear technical communication between Client, Technical Specialist and Technical Director
Review project documents (policies, standards, specifications, drawings, data sheets) to assure they meet the project and the company’s objectives;
Seek and implement opportunities to add value to project;
Act as a change agent for specialized areas, including assessing readiness to engage in change efforts and designing and executing change strategies and how they may affect the project and make recommendations to the Technical Director;
Promote best practices, standardisation, methodologies and innovative solution.

For future international projects; project initiation processes will include: feasibility studies, writing specifications, justifications, capital expenditure and extraordinary expenditure approvals.
Key work outputs (results required): Ensure contracts and projects are executed on time and in budget.

Travel requirements (International projects only): Rotation schedule, 6 weeks on and 3 weeks off. Project duration is 12 months: 1-month assembly, 1-month commissioning and 10 months production.

Job Qualification & Experience:

GCC (non negotiable)

Tertiary qualification in Mining / Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution.

Computer literate – good knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Projects).

5 to 10 years’ post qualification experience including: underground mining and project management;
contractually/commercially savvy (NEC principles mainly, understanding of FIDIC advantageous).

Medically fit to work underground and prepared to spend extensive periods away from home. Project work will be based in or between sites.

Read blueprints, schematics and diagrams to determine the method and sequence of assembly of a part, machine or piece of equipment. Ability to work productively under pressure.

The ability to communicate with people at all levels within the company.

Good command of the English language, good communication and people skills, excellent attention to detail, excellent problem-solving skills and customer focused.

Knowledge of the Laws and Regulations governing Mining Safety in South Africa governed by Act 29 of the 1996 Mine Health and Safety Act. To familiarize yourself with the Laws and Regulations governed by the Country that your project is based.
