Job Description:
A world-class, state-of-the-art vehicle manufacturing facility is looking to appoint an Engineering Controls Specialist with an emphasis on robotic controls & PLC specialization. The responsible person will be required to develop, implement, monitor and maintain efficient automation controls processes. To specialize in the continuous improvement, troubleshooting and programming of PLC’s/ Robots as well as other automation equipment.
- Mechanical/Mechatronics/Electrical National Diploma (S- course) or Mechanical/Mechatronics/Electrical Engineering B-Tech.
- Minimum of 5 years within the Automotive Industry and Maintenance background.
- 2-3 Years in a Leadership role.

Reports to: Maintenance Manager
Primary purpose: This position is for an Engineering Controls Specialist with an emphasis on robotic controls & PLC specialization. The responsible person will be required to develop, implement, monitor and maintain efficient automation controls processes. To specialize in the continuous improvement, troubleshooting and programming of PLCs/ Robots as well as other automation equipment.
Responsibilities / accountabilities:
- Initiates measures to improve equipment performance, methods and quality.
- Manage all software and hardware installed on different types of equipment.
- Ensure minimal downtimes, proper documentation, software back-ups and version control.
- Reporting / presenting and escalate to management as needed.
- To lead, set-up and participate in cross-functional team meetings.
- Possess the propensity to take the lead in any breakdown situation.
- Design, fault find and program using PLCs, HMI and SCADA.
- Ability to read blueprints, AutoCAD, E-Plan, interpret and modify electrical schematics.
- Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
- Train and develop training documentation for maintenance personnel.
- Effective Root causes analysis towards downtime.
- Proactive approach to MOS.
Performance measures/ success criteria:
- Improve equipment uptime using data analysis and Preventative Maintenance planning.
- Undertake root cause analysis and Six Sigma methodology to implement Permanent Corrective Actions (PCA’s), Kaizen’s, Greenbelt Project.
- Management of constraints with the use of FIS, Scada reporting.
- Develop and implement activities to improve MTTR and MTBF.
- Take responsibility for investigating and introducing new Engineering Technologies and strategies.
- Have the ability and capability to independently carry-out respective Roles and Responsibilities enlisting the support of key stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance and adherence for Health Charts.
- Lead a team of Technicians.

Job Qualification & Experience:
Knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA):
- Always improving personal knowledge, looking for new ways and technologies to improve plant performance.
- Excellent troubleshooting / problem-solving methodologies such as 6 Sigma, 5 Why’s, Fishbone etc.
- Able to work under pressure and should be a team player.
- Siemens, Mitsubishi PLCs. Must be able to Program, monitor, fault-find, and make improvements.
- Kawasaki and Fanuc robot fault finding and programming skill. Sealer systems experience an advantage.
- SEW, Danfoss, Siemens drives working knowledge.
- Proficient in Automation networks including Ethernet, Profinet, Profibus and Wireless Networks.
- Fault-finding and continuous improvement execution and implementation.
- HMI’s – Adroit, Win CC Scada fault finding and programming skill.
- Excellent PC knowledge
- Behavioral and Leadership skills.
- Good presentation skills
- Excellent English oral and written communication.
- Ability to analyze and interpret data analysis.
- Self-Motivated, results-driven and competent individual.
- Read Mechanical and Electronic schematics to ensure adherence to specifications and standards.
- Extensive knowledge of Electronics.
- 6 Sigma trained/Certified.
Qualifications and experience:
- Mechanical/Mechatronics/Electrical National Diploma (S- course) or Mechanical/Mechatronics/Electrical Engineering B-Tech.
- Minimum of 5 years within the Automotive Industry and Maintenance background.
