Mechanical Engineer

Current / most recent job title?

Mechanical Engineer – Project Manager

1. Primary purpose of current/most recent position:

Lead a team of mechanical design engineers in developing and manufacturing a novel solar thermal power plant prototype aimed for the African market.

2. Core elements or functions that must operate effectively in order to achieve primary purpose:

Communication – understand the problem scope and my responsibility.
Respect – receiving work and delegating work in a respectful, professional manner.
Work/Life Balance – allowing time to focus on work tasks while also giving time to decompress and rest.

3. Description of self, along with greater purpose and passions:

I am a practically minded problem solver with skills in mechanical design and thermodynamic modelling. I have a keen interest in renewable energy generation, sustainable crop production, affordable water purification, clean air supply and effective waste management/recycling. I’m looking for an opportunity to make a lasting impact on sustainable industry practices and improve our quality of life.

4. Ideal business title:

Mechanical design engineer / project manager of an engineering consulting firm aimed at optimizing current industrial energy utilization or research and development of: renewable power generation technology, hydroponics farming systems, water desalination & purification devices, air purification systems, sustainable waste management systems.

5. Key responsibilities and accountabilities of ideal position:

Project management: Negotiation, project acquisition, budget oversight, planning, organizing, leading and controlling.
Mechanical design: from user requirements to detailed design + manufacturing and assembly.
Thermodynamic modelling: First and second law thermodynamic analysis of power cycles, HVAC systems, turbines, compressors and pumps.

6. Skill area of competence:

Limit state mechanical design according to SANS structural codes
Thermodynamics modelling for first law and second law analysis
SolidWorks CAD mechanical design and FEA analysis
ANSYS FEM and CFD analysis
Python mechanical and thermodynamic modelling and solution optimization
Steel Fabrication – drilling, grinding, welding, milling, lathe, laser cutting

7. Career summary:

2 years Mechanical Design
2 years Project Management
1 year Manufacturing

8. Achievements:

Lead the engineering design team to complete the Solar Turbo CHP project within the 2 year project timeline and on budget despite industrial and financial effects of COVID.
Designed an excel VBA static loading optimizer that located the connections for the solar tracker’s linear actuators saving time and money on the Solar Turbo CHP project.
Graduated my MEng Mechanical Engineering Degree cum laude.
Obtained bursary funding for my mechanical engineering post graduate studies due to my academic achievement. Also obtained an academic achievement award for completing my third year of undergraduate studies in the top 20 performing students. Also invited to be a member of the Golden Key Honors society for my second and third year of undergraduate studies.

9. What do you absolutely love doing?

I love to figure out solutions to complex problems. It lights me up when I get a chance to model a problem in Python or Excel and then use optimization algorithms to determine the best solutions to these problems.
I also enjoy managing a team. Developing a work scope and delegating, guiding and motivating a team towards solving a problem is a privilege and responsibility I hope to get more of further on in my career.

10. Ideal company (culture and values):

“Ideally looking to stay in the US for 3 months and in SA for 3 months, in 6-month cycles for the next 5 years as my partner is going to be working off her green card. This means I’d require remote work while I’m in the US and when I return from the US I’d be available to work on-site.”
