What do you absolutely love doing?
Solving unique challenges and establishing first of a kind processes. Being part of an international community focused on implementing/developing solutions to challenges.
Ideal company (culture and values):
Forefront technological and engineering house with an international presence and involved in the construction and commissioning of facilities. Alternatively, a firm that specialises in management consulting. A culture of excellence being rewarded and values are not compromised.
Where would you like to be in your career in the next 5 to 10 years, what would you like to have achieved?
I have spent my career on projects that have not progressed beyond the procurement phase except minor repair and replacement projects. So, in 5 to 10 year’s time I would like to have been involved in a number of large projects that have been commissioned and put in to operation. I would dearly like to take part in the construction and commissioning of facilities (or systems) in some capacity. Therefore, my ideal company would be one that is actively involved in the entire lifecycle of a project, from design through to decommissioning and closure of a facility, and specifically one that performs construction and commissioning of facilities/systems.
What are your strengths?
My greatest strength is problem solving, specifically when the usual approaches have failed to address the problem. In these cases, I often have to do research and apply skills and techniques from another discipline to address the problem. Systems engineering is a focus area that may provide solutions to other disciplines, ranging from engineering to project management and other logical operations.
Another strength of mine is being thrown into the proverbial deep end and to somehow make it work/happen. To a large extent I have chosen my projects on this basis – it must be complex, novel or have significant budgetary/time constraints to be of interest to me. I like finding ways to make stuff work, to overcome a challenge, and especially so if it is new (novel).
Ideation and conceptualization are other strengths of mine, regardless of being applied in a design capacity.
What are your weaknesses (e.g. most important blind spots / developmental needs identified)?
Routine tasks that do not have some sort of challenge – I do get bored having to redo the same tasks, especially if there is no challenge to it.
I do not flourish in an environment where I am on constant supervision and very strict management. I prefer getting assigned a task and a deadline and being trusted to do the work without constant supervision. (This should not be confused with team work activities, I work equally well in a team than on my own).
Motivation to move (please select): End of contract
Location Preference: I am open to positions both nationally and internationally.
